While the FAA requires a minimum of 40 flight hours to obtain a Private Pilot Certificate, most students typically complete the process in closer to 50 hours.

Breakdown of Flight Hours:

  • 20 hours of flight training with an instructor: In reality, most students will need closer to 30 hours.

  • 10 hours of solo flight time: Expect to log around 10-15 hours on your own.

Cost Estimates:

  • Aircraft Rental (DA20 at $165/hr):

    • For 30 hours of flight training: $4,950

    • For 15 hours of solo time: $2,475

  • Instructor Fees ($65/hr):

    • Estimated 30 hours of instruction (including ground instruction): $1,950

    • Centerline Aviation eight-week Ground School: $650

    • Online Ground School - Many options available ranging in price from $150-$500

    • Estimated 15 hours of one-on-one Instruction to prepare you for the checkride: $975

  • Books and Study Materials:

    • Includes logbook, Airplane Flying Handbook, Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, and ASA 2022 Private Test Prep: $100 +/-

  • FAA Medical Certificate (3rd, 2nd, or 1st class):

    • Examination fee: $150 +/-

  • Headset:

    • Depending on quality, prices range from $250 - $1,250

  • Written Exam:

    • Computerized test: $150

  • Check Ride:

    • Final examination with an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner, including examiner fee and 1.5 hours of flight time: $850
